about

This is a song I wrote for my grandfather, Francisco Pabaira Tabayoyong. Growing up, we would spend the summers with him. He loved to garden and his was not only a place where he grew apples, pears, tomatoes and countless other things, but also a playground for his grandchildren. He built us swing sets, see-saws, jungle gyms, a wooden elephant on wheels, go-carts...anything we wanted, he'd build for us. To us, Grampa was invincible and could do anything. He passed down to each of us his industrious nature, creativity and love of good beer. Most importantly, he taught us the value of family and reminded us constantly to take care of each other. That is why the 'garden' metaphor is so symbolic. I wrote this song after he passed away on July 12, 2010. It's the first track of mine to be released. Thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy it.

The photo is not of his garden, but of Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, CA - a place my grandparents would take us every summer.

lyrics

the seeds you planted thrive
the fruit of your labor
your love is alive
the heart of what matters will find
we are still children inside

and the garden grows
the garden grows
the garden grows

the things you built with your hands
within the orchard
your buildings still stand
and time will push us along
but you are never really gone

and the garden grows
the garden grows
the garden grows

golden apples, one by one
ripen under summer's sun
and we grow
we grow
we grow

remembering you stood so tall
invincible once
but even a redwood must fall
all that we are and all that we do
comes from the strength we got from you

and the garden grows
the garden grows
the garden grows
